Atlanta, GA - Ten years ago this coming week, the "No Name Storm," with its hurricane-force winds and a tidal surge as high as 12 feet in some places, hit the Florida's central Gulf Coast on March 13, 1993. The storm caused the death of 26 people statewide, damaged or destroyed approximately 18,000 homes and caused more than $500 million in property damage.

The recovery effort resulted in nearly $110 million from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the state in disaster assistance for individuals, business owners, communities and state agencies, and mitigation efforts throughout the state. A total of 17,578 residents applied for assistance throughout the 39 designated counties.

The federal share of the wide-ranging disaster relief effort included more than $16.5 million in disaster housing grants, which covers temporary rental assistance and emergency essential repairs; $66.8 million in U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) low-interest loans for individuals and business owners; and $18.3 million in individual and family grants for serious disaster needs not covered by other federal programs. FEMA also provided $33,405,528 in public assistance for affected local governments, state agencies, special districts, and certain private non-profit organizations to pay 75 percent of the approved cost for debris removal, emergency protective services, and restoring damaged public facilities.

Ken Burris, FEMA's Regional Director, noted the extensive impact of the severe storm and pointed out an additional $3.4 million in agency funds were provided for a variety of hazard mitigation projects throughout the state to reduce future disaster damages.

Below are some of the overall disaster assistance statistics. These totals do not include the millions of dollars in losses that were covered by private insurance carriers.
