BILOXI, Miss. -- “Seeing is believing” is the goal of model houses that demonstrate disaster-resistant construction techniques. The Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is rolling out two 4 by 6 foot model houses that will feature construction techniques to help Mississippi residents rebuild safer and stronger.

Developed by FEMA’s Mitigation Community Education Outreach engineers and built by local students, the models provide communities with visual examples of mitigation construction techniques and concepts to improve home construction and repair. Models show different examples of house footings, wall strengthening approaches and ways to secure ceiling joists.

The initial model shows a simulated elevated home. The second, a “slab-on-grade” model was created with central and north Mississippi sites in mind.
