BILOXI, Miss. -- The Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) in Hattiesburg scheduled to close on April 21 will transition on April 22 to a U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) Disaster Loan Assistance Center.

The SBA said its Disaster Loan Assistance Center will open in the former FEMA and MEMA Disaster Recovery Center at 300 East 5th Street in Hattiesburg. The center will be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday through June 9.

“SBA thought it was important to have staff in this location to assist those homeowners, renters, business owners and non-profit organizations who received damage from Hurricane Katrina with the SBA loan application process,” said Frank Skaggs, director of SBA Field Operations Center East. “Providing individual assistance is an important part of what we do to help people recover from a disaster.”

Although the deadline for individual assistance has passed, business owners may still obtain, complete and return applications for economic injury disaster loans through May 29 at the SBA Disaster Loan Assistance Center.

Anyone unable to visit the center may call the SBA Disaster Assistance National Customer Service Center at 1-800-659-2955 or 1-800-877-8339 for the hearing-impaired Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. CDT.

The applications for economic recovery can be mailed to: U.S. Small Business Administration, National Processing and Disbursement Center, 14925 Kingsport Road, Fort Worth, Texas 76155.

FEMA manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates mitigation activities, works with state and local emergency managers, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program. FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on March 1, 2003.
