Symposium Offered On Mitigation Program in D'Iberville

BILOXI, Miss. -- The City of D'Iberville will host a Community Outreach Symposium Jan. 24, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the D'Iberville Council Chambers. The symposium will offer an open community forum for local citizens, design professionals, engineers, builders and others interested in information on the principles and practices required for new construction and reconstruction of homes and businesses in the City of D'Iberville.

Representatives from the Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Hazard Mitigation Group will be available to answer questions concerning the National Flood Insurance Program, Advisory Base Flood Elevation maps, and construction and elevation techniques. City building and permitting officials will also be present.

The FEMA mitigation model house will be on display at the symposium. The model home incorporates techniques for building stronger, more storm-resistant structures needed in coastal areas. The model was constructed by vocational and high school students from the lower six counties.

FEMA manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident, initiates mitigation activities and manages the National Flood Insurance Program. FEMA works closely with state and local emergency managers, law enforcement personnel, firefighters and other first responders. FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on March 1, 2003.
