MOBILE, Ala. -- Persons affected by Hurricane Ivan and having legal issues may call the Alabama State Bar toll-free at 1-800-354-6154, and ask for the Disaster Relief Program. The Program is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to noon, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

This service is generally for those individuals at or below poverty level with an issue directly related to the disaster beginning September 13, continuing through September 30, 2004.

The assistance that volunteer lawyers provide typically includes advice on problems with landlords and insurance claims, preparing wills and other legal papers lost in a disaster, help with home repair and contractor issues, and help with guardianships and other similar legal problems.

No member of the volunteer attorney group will accept fee-generating services. Their services are authorized only to assist in resolving issues arising from this disaster.

The Hotline is hosted by the Alabama State Bar and staffed by the Alabama Volunteer Lawyers Program and the Alabama Young Lawyers’ Association Disaster Legal Services Committee.

On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
