HARRISBURG, Pa. -- Checks issued by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to residents approved for disaster assistance are a great source of relief and comfort. However, individuals receiving state and federal funds should be careful to use them wisely.

“We have a responsibility to assist individuals who suffered damages from the storms that began April 2,” said Tom Davies, federal coordinating officer. “At the same time, we must caution that these monies can only be used for the intended purposes.” Residents are issued funds for the needs listed below:

Housing Assistance

Other Needs

“The funds will help Pennsylvania residents meet basic needs and regain a normal life,” said Adrian R. King Jr., state coordinating officer for the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency (PEMA). “We want to see that happen. It would be inappropriate to delay the process by misusing funds.”

Abuse or fraud in the use of FEMA funds should be reported by calling 1-800-323-8603.

FEMA prepares the nation for all hazards and manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates mitigation activities, trains first responders, works with state and local emergency managers, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration. FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on March 1, 2003.
