Disaster Housing Assistance to McKean County Flood Victims Now Totals More than $550,000

HARRISBURG, Pa. -- Disaster housing grants totaling $550,279 have been issued to 347 McKean County disaster assistance applicants, federal and state officials announced today.
"The housing needs of people who have just been through a flood are urgent and our aim is to help return these people to their homes as soon as possible," said Jack Schuback, Federal Coordinating Officer for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). "These checks help to accomplish that."
Bob Churchman, State Coordinating Officer for the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency (PEMA) said the housing figures emphasize cooperation at a local, county, state and federal level. "It has been just over two weeks since the declaration and we are pleased with the number of housing checks that have been issued," he said.
The Disaster Recovery Center at 62 Main St., Bradford, will close at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 17. However, state and federal officials continue to urge residents who have suffered losses to homes or businesses because of heavy rains and flooding to register for disaster assistance by calling the toll-free application number, 1-800-462-9029 (TTY 1-800-462-7585). Both phone lines are open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
Nearly 700 McKean County residents have applied for assistance since President Clinton's disaster declaration on Sept. 1.
Disaster housing assistance comes in the form of grants for rental housing and emergency repairs needed to make a residence habitable.
