HARRISBURG, Pa. -- A Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) will open at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 21 in Juniata County to provide disaster information and assistance to victims of heavy rains and flooding that struck the area late last month. The DRC will be located at the Richfield Fire Company, Route 35 South, Richfield.
The hours of operation will be 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 21 and Wednesday, Sept. 22.
Federal and state officials urge residents who have suffered losses to homes or businesses because of flooding to register for federal disaster assistance before going to the DRC by calling FEMA's toll-free number, 1-800-462-9029 (TTY 1-800-462-7585). Both telephone lines are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. seven days a week.
Juniata County was made eligible for disaster assistance on Friday after President Clinton declared the county a major disaster following severe storms and flooding that occurred Aug. 20 and 21.
Federal aid including Individual Assistance and Hazard Mitigation was made available. Under the individual assistance program, residents may be eligible for programs such as disaster housing assistance, low-interest loans to repair or replace storm-damaged property, and grants for serious needs and necessary expenses not met by other programs.
The hazard mitigation program provides money to help protect homes and businesses against future damage by flood proofing, relocating or elevating buildings, and similar protective or preventative measures.
