Rental Housing Needed For Disaster Victims

HAMPTON, Va. -- Federal and state officials are asking rental property owners in Virginia to help hurricane victims who are temporarily displaced from their homes.
"Thousands of Virginians cannot return to their residences until waters recede and people's homes are made safe," said Robert J. Gunter, the Federal Coordinating Officer of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). FEMA's Disaster Housing Program assists homeowners and renters to find a safe place to live until their homes are repaired. Disaster housing assistance is given as a tax-free grant and does not have to be repaid.
FEMA is urging owners and managers of available rental properties to fax the following information to FEMA/Human Services at (757) 896-7218 (fax):
- Name and phone number of property owner or manager to contact
- Complete address of property, including county
- Rental costs of units
- Number of bedrooms in unit(s)
- Security deposit requirements
- Children allowed?
- Pets allowed?
- Access for the handicapped?
- Lease required?
- HUD or Section 8 certification?
