HAMPTON, Va. -- Disaster victims of Hurricane Floyd in the City of Franklin and Southampton area are in immediate need of volunteers for manual labor. Volunteers are also needed for administrative duties like staffing phone lines and registering volunteers.
Also, the Salvation Army needs tractor trailer drivers within the next three days to transport goods from one location to another. Volunteers are also needed to work in the food distribution center in Franklin. "We are in need of immediate help," Wendy Shepherd, volunteer coordinator for Franklin's Department of Emergency Services, said. "The City of Franklin downtown area is in the process of debris cleanup. We need help right now, not a week from now."
Business owners in the area will supervise volunteers, and anyone over the age of 16 is asked to help. Special safety clothing is no longer required, but volunteers are asked to bring with them work boots, leather gloves and identification like a driver's license.
Volunteers should report in at the tent at Paul D. Camp Community College located in Franklin at the corner of College and Armory Drive. If you would like to volunteer but need more information please contact the volunteer hotline at 757-569-0268.
