HAMPTON, Va. -- Twelve more jurisdictions were made eligible today for assistance as a result of damage from Hurricane Floyd, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Virginia Department of Emergency Services (VDES) announced today.

The city of Poquoson was named eligible for individual assistance and the city of Hopewell was named eligible for individual and public assistance. New counties added on to the presidential declaration eligible for individual assistance are: Fairfax, Hanover and Henrico. Counties already receiving public assistance and now are eligible for individual assistance are: Brunswick, Charles City, Essex, New Kent, Northampton, Richmond and Westmoreland.

Under the individual assistance program, residents may be eligible for programs such as disaster housing assistance, low-interest loans to repair or replace storm-damaged property, and grants for serious needs and necessary expenses not met by other programs.

"FEMA and the state continue to search for a long-term solution for those disaster victims in temporary housing," said Robert J. Gunter, FEMA Federal Coordninating Officer. FEMA's Disaster Housing Program assists homeowners and renters whose primary residences have been damaged by the disaster to find a safe place to live until their homes are repaired.

The public assistance program provides federal funds for 75 percent of approved costs of debris removal, storm-related emergency services, and repairing or replacing damaged public facilities, such as roads, bridges and utilities. The hazard mitigation program provides money to help protect homes and businesses against future damage by flood proofing, relocating or elevating buildings, and similar protective or preventive measures.

Jurisdictions approved for assistance earlier are the cities of Chesapeake, Colonial Heights, Emporia, Franklin, Hampton, Newport News, Norfolk, Petersburg, Portsmouth, Richmond, Suffolk, Virginia Beach, Williamsburg and the counties of Accomack, Brunswick, Caroline, Charles City, Chesterfield, Dinwiddie, Essex, Gloucester, Greensville, Halifax, Isle of Wight, James City, King and Queen, King George, King William, Lancaster, Lunenburg, Mathews, Mecklenburg, Middlesex, New Kent, Northampton, Northumberland, Prince George, Richmond, Southampton, Surry, Sussex, Westmoreland and York.

Residents of counties eligible for individual assistance can apply for disaster assistance by calling the toll-free registration number, 1-800-462-9029. People with speech or hearing impairments can call 1-800-462-8575 (TTY).
