CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Federal and state officials announced today the closing of the Nicholas County and Summers County Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs) at close of business on Saturday, December 20.

Anyone with questions or who would like to check on the status of his or her application in person should do so by 7 p.m. on the closing date. Residents who still have questions after the center closes may call the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The FEMA Helpline number is 1-800-621-3362 or, TTY 1-800-462-7585 for the hearing or speech-impaired. Helpline representatives will be able to give the same information provided by officials at the recovery center.

The Disaster Recovery Centers are located at:

Richwood, WV
Daily 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Summers Memorial Building

“We establish the Disaster Recovery Centers in order to make it possible for residents to talk to a disaster recovery specialist face to face if they want to,” said Michael Bolch, federal coordinating officer for FEMA. “However, they can be sure the same information is available to them when they call FEMA’s toll free number. The lines are open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.”

On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
