Additional Counties Declared Eligible For Public Assistance

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- State and federal officials announced today that 25 additional counties are eligible for Public Assistance under the November 21, 2003 federal disaster declaration. This brings the total number of counties declared eligible for Public Assistance to 31. West Virginia, with a total of 55 counties, was widely affected by the November storms.

The counties just declared eligible for Public Assistance are Barbour, Braxton, Calhoun, Doddridge, Fayette, Gilmer, Greenbrier, Lewis, Marion, Marshall, McDowell, Mercer, Monroe, Nicholas, Pendleton, Putnam, Pocahontas, Raleigh, Ritchie, Summers, Taylor, Upshur, Webster, Wetzel and Wyoming.

Counties previously declared eligible for Public Assistance are Boone, Clay, Kanawha, Lincoln, Logan and Wayne.

Counties approved for Public Assistance may receive help for emergency work such as debris removal and emergency protective measures; or for permanent work including repair of roads and bridges, water control facilities, buildings and equipment, utilities and parks, recreational facilities and other public items and places.

On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
