Harrisburg, PA -- Operating hours have changed for the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) toll-free registration and helpline numbers. Effective today, the registration and helpline will be staffed from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Friday, disaster recovery officials said.
Homeowners, renters and business owners in Lackawanna County who had damage from the storms that hit there Labor Day week, who have not already applied should call and register as soon as possible.
Applicants who have disaster-related questions also should call the toll-free number.
David M. Sanko, Director of the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency, stressed the importance of registering for assistance. Director Sanko said, "The only way to find out what long-term disaster aid you may be eligible for is to call without delay. That is the first step in getting disaster assistance."
Both registration and the helpline can be reached at 1-800-621-FEMA (3362). The hearing- or speech-impaired with TTY equipment may call 1-800-462-7585.
"These numbers provide direct access to FEMA, whether it's to register, ask questions about the status of your application, or to update information in your file," Federal Coordinating Officer Tom Davies said. "All you need to do is pick up the telephone and call."
On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages Citizen Corps, the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
