Washington, DC -- The Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) toll-free disaster assistance lines begin new hours effective today, Monday, October 6, 2003.

People who suffered damage or loss of work from Hurricane Isabel, but who have not applied for assistance, may call the registration line, 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) to begin the recovery process. For the hearing or speech impaired, the TTY number is 1-800-462-7585. Both toll-free numbers are now available from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., seven days a week.

FEMA also is available to answer applicant questions by calling the same toll-free numbers and selecting the "Helpline" option.

On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages Citizen Corps, the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
