Richmond, VA - The U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) registration hours will change beginning today.
Virginians in the disaster-declared counties who need to register for disaster assistance may call the FEMA registration line at: 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., seven days a week. Those who are speech or hearing impaired may call TTY 1-800-462-7585.
Disaster assistance covers a wide range of programs such as funding for housing assistance, U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) low-interest loans for individuals and businesses to repair or replace damaged property, and grants for serious needs and necessary expenses not met by other programs.
Businesses and residents who suffered damages or losses from Hurricane Isabel who have insurance coverage should first contact their insurance company. If they have additional needs not met by their insurance, they should apply with FEMA for disaster assistance.
When calling to apply, have the following information available:

Your current phone number;

Your address at the time of the disaster and the address where you are now staying;

Your Social Security number, if available;

A general list of damages and losses you suffered;

Good directions to the property that was damaged; and
- If insured, your insurance policy number or the agent and company name.
On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages Citizen Corps, the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
