New Castle, DE -- Families and individuals who suffered damage from tropical storm Henri and Hurricane Isabel are quickly receiving assistance from state, federal, local and voluntary agencies. These agencies are working in partnership to speed help to Delaware residents.
Recovery services summary as of 6:30 a.m., Friday, October 3, 2003:
- 411 applications have been received through the FEMA toll free registration number 800-621-FEMA (3362), TTY: 800-462-7585. Individuals and business owners should call to register for disaster related state and federal assistance.

75 percent of damage inspections issued have been completed.

$479,335.92 from the Individuals and Households Program has been disbursed to the victims. The first checks were sent less than 10 days after the September 20 federal declaration for Hurricane Isabel and less than 7 days after the Declaration for tropical storm Henri.

The Disaster Unemployment Assistance program (DUA) is available to residents living or working in New Castle, Kent, and Sussex counties who are unable to work as of September 21 due to damage incurred by Hurricane Isabel. The DUA may provide weekly benefit payments to those out of work due to the disaster, including self-employed persons, farm workers, farm and ranch owners, and others not covered by regular unemployment programs.

2 Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs) opened and were located in New Castle and Sussex counties. The center in Wilmington continues to be open from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. until further notice at the St. Marks United Methodist Church. The DRC in Georgetown has closed. People affected by the storms may go to the DRC to have questions answered about disaster assistance in person.
- 6,183 meals and snacks have been served by the coordinated efforts of the American Red Cross and the St. Marks United Methodist Church Hospitality Council. The Red Cross is delivering sandwiches to disaster victims and the Hospitality Council is serving hot meals at the church.
On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages Citizen Corps, the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
