Charleston, WV -- Officials are encouraging individuals and businesses in Preston County to call the FEMA toll-free teleregistration number if they were affected by the severe storms, flooding and landslides occurring between June 11 and July 15, 2003. Even if residents have already registered with the Red Cross, Salvation Army or other voluntary agencies or have reported damage to local officials, they still need to call the FEMA number to be considered for state/federal assistance.

A variety of programs are available such as: housing assistance, which may include help with rental or repairs; U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) low-interest disaster loans for individuals, renters and businesses to repair or replace damaged property; disaster unemployment assistance; and grants for serious needs and necessary disaster expenses not met by other programs.

To date, the counties declared for Individual Assistance are Berkeley, Boone, Cabell, Doddridge, Harrison, Kanawha, Lincoln, Logan, Mason, McDowell, Mingo, Monongalia, Nicholas, Preston, Putnam, Ritchie, Wayne, and Wyoming.

If you live or work in a disaster-declared county and suffered damages to your home or other losses, call the FEMA toll-free teleregistration line at 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or TTY 1-800-462-7585 for the speech- or hearing-impaired. You may call from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday, until further notice. Each application is handled on a case-by-case basis.
