Charleston, WV -- Federal and state officials advise those who have received disaster assistance funds to use the money carefully. More than $2.4 million in federal grants is already in the hands of those who are recovering from the severe storms, flooding and landslides that began on June 11.

"It is our responsibility to help people in need; and, at the same time, make sure that the taxpayers' money is spent correctly," said Federal Coordinating Officer Louis Botta.

"Disaster funds cover basic needs only," added State Coordinating Officer Steve Kappa of the West Virginia Office of Emergency Services. "The funds help people get back on their feet, but cannot compensate for their entire loss."
