BRIDGEPORT, W. Va. -- Gov. Joe Manchin presented disaster recovery checks here today to the first three applicants who qualified for the Other Needs Assistance (ONA) program of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The program is administered by the state of West Virginia.

Receiving the checks at the FEMA-state Joint Field Office were: Kathleen M. Kennedy of Bridgeport, April L. High of Shinnston and Robert A. Trott of Shinnston.

The ONA program covers necessary expenses or serious needs of a disaster victim because of disaster-related issues such as medical or dental care, funerals, or transportation needs. To date, a total of $93,990 has been approved for ONA.

FEMA coordinates the federal government's role in preparing for, preventing, mitigating the effects of, responding to, and recovering from all domestic disasters, whether natural or man-made, including acts of terror.
