Philadelphia, PA -- Funding for the Fiscal Year 2002 Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program has been increased to a total of $360 million. The U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) is sponsoring a series of special workshops across the country to explain the new application process to interested fire department representatives. The West Virginia workshops are scheduled Saturday March 2 at the Fairmont State College (Clarksburg Campus, 6th and Main Street) starting at 1 p.m. and Sunday March 3 at the Beaver Fire Department, 3rd Street in Beaver starting at 1 p.m.

The grant workshops are not prerequisite to receiving information on application procedures, and all fire departments are encouraged to check out the FEMA grant website: www.usfa.fema.gov/grants. This year's application process is primarily internet based, but paper applications will be accepted from fire departments without internet access. Fire companies can apply for grants to cover the cost of vehicles, firefighting equipment, personal protective equipment, training, fire prevention and firefighter fitness. In addition, emergency medical services within fire departments are eligible. For more information contact Jack Schuback 215-931-5624.
