Second Information Booth To Open Near Shockoe Bottom

RICHMOND, Va. -- Victims of Tropical Depression Gaston can visit a new information booth near Shockoe Bottom for tips on cleaning up and repairing flood damaged property. The public can also go there to learn how to protect homes and businesses against future flood damage.
The booth, which opened today, is located at Harper Hardware Inc. at 1712 E. Broad St. It’s staffed by members of the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) flood mitigation branch. The hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday.
“This is a good opportunity for people with questions on how to properly clean up after a flood,” said Marianne C. Jackson, the FEMA federal coordinating officer. “Our experts are available not only for cleanup questions, but also to answer concerns about how to protect property before the next flood strikes.”
“We’re happy to assist anyone who needs to know the best way to approach a flood-related project,” said Michael M. Cline, Virginia Department of Emergency Management coordinator. “It’s best to prepare for the inevitable.”
This is the second information booth that FEMA and VDEM is operating in the Richmond area. The other one is located at the Lowe’s home improvement store at 1604 W. Broad St. in Richmond. It is also open 8 a.m.to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday.
On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
