Disaster Recovery Centers Open

Washington, DC -- Officials from the District of Columbia Emergency Management Agency and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) have established two Disaster Recovery Centers to assist individuals and businesses affected by the storms of August 10-12, 2001. The centers will open in the District on Wednesday, August 22, and will operate from 8 AM to 8 PM, seven days a week, until further notice. The location of the two centers is:

Frank D. Reeves Municipal Center
2000 14th St., NW-2nd floor, Community Room
(Corner of 14th and U St.)
Metro stop: U St. & Cardozo - (Green Line)
Harry Thomas Recreation Center
1743 Lincoln Road, NE
(Corner of S Street)
Metro stop: Rhode Island stop -- 4th & Rhode Island - (Red Line)

Disaster representatives at the Center will provide recovery information on available assistance such as temporary housing assistance, individual and family grants, U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) low-interest disaster loans, and disaster unemployment assistance. The assistance offered under these federal and District government programs covers basic needs only; it will not normally compensate individuals for their entire loss. For those who have insurance, the government may help pay for basic needs not covered under their insurance policies.

Federal Coordinating Officer Tom Davies joined District of Columbia Coordinating Officer Peter LaPorte in encouraging individuals affected by the disaster to visit the center. "There is a lot of information available for homeowners, renters, and businesses," said Tom Davies. "This is a great opportunity for individuals to sit down with different agencies and get their questions answered concerning the recovery process."

Individuals who have been affected by the disaster should start the application process before visiting the center by calling FEMA's toll-free number at 1-800-462-9029. Hearing- and speech-impaired individuals may call TTY at 1-800-462-7585.
