Deadline Nears For Applying For Disaster Assistance

CHARLESTON, W. Va. -- Friday, April 28, will be the last day for West Virginians to apply for state and federal disaster recovery assistance, according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
Residents of counties declared as presidential disaster areas and whose property or businesses were damaged by February storms, landslides and flash flooding are encouraged to use FEMA's toll-free numbers to apply for assistance. The number is 1-800-462-9029. Those with hearing impairments can apply by dialing (TTY) 1-800-462-7585.
Applicants may qualify for a variety of low-interest loans or grants to help them get back on their feet following the storm.
"FEMA's programs are designed to assist those who have suffered damage with making a start down that road to recovery," said Justo Hernandez, FEMA's federal coordinating officer for the disaster.
"We can't do everything, but we can help people make a start. We want to make sure we reach all of those in need," he said. "Once you register for assistance it takes only a week for an inspector to visit you to verify your losses. Then, if you are eligible, it takes seven to 10 days thereafter to receive a check," Hernandez added.
Twenty-five West Virginia counties have been designated as disaster areas eligible to receive funding for individual assistance since the storm swept across the state in mid- February.
