CVMF Animal Emergency Management Programs

Important program anouncement!

On July 28, 2008, Dr. Kevin Dennison left CVMF as Director of Animal Emergency Management Programs to accept a position in USDA APHIS Animal Care, working on emergency programs for the western region of the US (all states and territories west of the Mississippi).  Dr. Dennison will be based in Fort Collins, CO and can be contacted through USDA APHIS Animal Care and 970-494-7478.  Dr. Dennison will continue to work with Colorado and other states on these important issues.  CVMF has retained Carol Wade, an active volunteer with the Veterinary Medical Reserve Corps, to act as Interim Program Coordinator to maintain program continuity and support while the search goes on for Dr. Dennison's replacement.  Since CVMF AEMP depends heavilty on public donations, your support is critical for CVMF at this important transitional period!

CVMF Animal Emergency Management Programs include the following programs that help protect public health and safety and animal health and safety in our state:

  1. The Colorado State Animal Response Team (SART) program serves to build statewide animal emergency planning and response network in partnership with government agencies and non-governmental organizations.
  2. The Colorado Veterinary Medical Reserve Corps provides veterinary professionals and support personnel with the opportunity for training and credentialing necessary to help respond to local or state emergenies in support of public and animal health.
  3. Support animal issues in the Colorado Emergency Operations Plan through Emergency Support Function #11, Part E, Companion Animals and Non-Commercial Livestock.
  4. Networking with similar state animal emergency management programs nationwide to address mutual challenges.

Goals of CVMF Animal Emergency Management Programs:

  1. To facilitate a prompt and effective response to animal emergency issues in Colorado in a manner consistent with the National Incident Management System and the Colorado Emergency Operations Plan.
  2. To reduce threats to the health and safety of people and animals
  3. To minimize the economic impact of animal issues during emergencies
  4. To maximize resources available for recovery efforts related to animals and animal agriculture

A brief history of Colorado SART:

Colorado SART is modeled after the North Carolina State Animal Response Team, which arose from the aftermath of Hurricane Floyd in 1999. Currently a number of states are developing SART or similar programs, thus helping to create a national standard for supporting animal emergency programs throughout the USA.

In April of 2003, 80 representatives from 60 government agencies and non-governmental organizations gathered in Denver for two days of presentations and strategic planning with support from the American Veterinary Medical Foundation and the North Carolina State Animal Response Team. The outcome of that conference was a new SART program for Colorado.
