Alexander: Tennesseans Will Receive More Coverage for Mental Health
Says One-Third of Americans Will Benefit from Mental Health Parity Legislation

October 8th, 2008 - WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) said today that one-third of Americans will now receive better health insurance coverage for mental health treatment.

“After years of negotiations, this bill strikes the right balance by helping those who need mental health coverage to get it at a reasonable price without placing an undue burden on small businesses and private insurers,” Alexander said. “I’m proud to have supported this mental health parity legislation that will help will help the 300,000 Tennesseans living with mental illness and their families.”

The Paul Wellstone and Pete Domenici Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act of 2008 was signed into law last Friday. The measure requires insurance companies that choose to provide mental health coverage do so at a cost and with limitations comparable to that of other medical and surgical benefits offered by the plan.

Alexander cosponsored an earlier version of the legislation that passed the Senate last year.
