NRC ANNOUNCES REVIEW SCHEDULE FOR
BROWNS FERRY LICENSE RENEWAL APPLICATION
Printable Version PDF Icon

The NRC has set a definitive schedule for reviewing the Tennessee Valley Authority's (TVA) application to renew, for an additional 20 years each, the operating licenses for Units 1, 2 and 3 of the Browns Ferry Nuclear Power Plant.

The NRC staff determined that a 36-month schedule (28 months if no hearing is involved) was necessary due to the complexity and uniqueness of the application, which involves a reactor that has been inactive for 19 years. Despite the complex issues involved, the Browns Ferry schedule is only six months longer than the standard schedule. The application was received on January 6, and a Federal Register notice providing the public an opportunity to request a hearing was published on March 10.

The Browns Ferry plant is located near Decatur, Alabama, and the current operating licenses for Units 1, 2 and 3 expire on December 20, 2013; June 28, 2014; and July 2, 2016, respectively. The letter to TVA management setting out the schedule is available electronically through the NRC's Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) on the NRC web site at: http://www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/adams/web-based.html, by entering accession number ML040910016. Help in using ADAMS is available from the NRC's Public Document Room at 800/397-4209 or 301/415-4737.
