NRC TO HOLD PUBLIC WORKSHOPS SEPTEMBER 23 - 25 IN
WASHINGTON, D.C., ON SAFETY ISSUES AT FUEL CYCLE FACILITIES
Printable Version PDF Icon

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will hold two public workshops September 23-25 in Washington, D.C., on safety issues at fuel cycle facilities involved in the processing and fabrication of uranium ore into reactor fuel.

The first workshop, on September 23 and 24, will discuss issues related to the NRC’s process for reviewing Integrated Safety Analysis (ISA) Summaries. ISA is a systematic analysis to identify facility and external hazards, their potential for causing accidents, and the likely consequences of accidents. The purpose of the September 25 workshop is to cover areas of potential misunderstanding regarding NRC regulations designed to prevent accidental criticality (a nuclear chain reaction).

Both workshops will be held at the Sofitel Hotel Lafayette Square, 806 15th Street N.W., Washington, D.C. The public is invited to participate in these meetings by discussing regulatory issues with NRC staff at designated points during the meetings.

Agendas for both meetings are available on the NRC’s web site through the electronic reading room, at http://www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/adams/web-based.html, by using accession numbers ML032530297 for the ISA workshop and ML032540411 for the session on criticality issues. Help in using the reading room is available by calling the NRC’s Public Document Room at (800) 397-4209 or (301) 415-4737.

For more information, contact Patrick Castleman, (301) 415-8118, regarding the ISA workshop, or Margaret Chatterton, (301) 415-7906, regarding the criticality workshop.
