NRC OVERSIGHT PANEL TO MEET WITH DAVIS-BESSE OFFICIALS OCTOBER 7-8
Printable Version PDF Icon

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission Davis-Besse oversight panel will hold two meetings on Tuesday, October 7, to review the status and adequacy of recent activities at the Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station. A third meeting will be held on October 8 to discuss the preliminary findings of two recent NRC inspections.

The plant, operated by FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Company near Oak Harbor, Ohio, has been shut down since February 16 of last year as a result of corrosion damage to its reactor vessel head.

The October 7 meetings will be at the Camp Perry Clubhouse, 1000 Lawrence Road, Bldg. 600, on Highway 2 west of Port Clinton. A picture identification is required to enter Camp Perry; the guards will provide visitors with directions to the meeting site.

The first October 7 meeting will begin at 2 p.m. (EDT), when the NRC oversight panel, set up to coordinate the agency's activities associated with the corrosion damage to the reactor vessel head, will meet with FirstEnergy officials. The meeting will focus on the recently completed seven-day pressure test of the reactor cooling system and the status of other work at the plant site. The public is invited to observe the business portion of the meeting and will have an opportunity to make comments and ask questions of the NRC staff before the meeting is adjourned.

The second October 7 meeting will begin at 7 p.m. (EDT) for the oversight panel to update the public on NRC's activities related to the reactor vessel head degradation and to provide a summary of the earlier meeting. The public will be invited to ask questions and make comments.

The October 8 meeting will begin at 9:30 a.m. (EDT) in the Energy Education Center at the Davis-Besse Administration Building, 5501 N. State Route 2, Oak Harbor. The NRC staff will meet with FirstEnergy officials to present the preliminary findings of two recently completed NRC inspections. One inspection covered the plant’s corrective action program - how it finds, evaluates, and fixes problems. The other inspection looked at the effectiveness of design reviews performed by FirstEnergy on plant safety systems.

Transcripts of both October 7 meetings will be posted in several weeks on the NRC's web site – http://www.nrc.gov. Select “Davis-Besse” from the Key Topics menu. The reports of the two inspections discussed on October 8 will also be available on the NRC web site in about four weeks.
