NRC TO UPDATE
PUBLIC ON REVIEW OF IRRADIATOR APPLICATION |
||
Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff
will hold a public meeting on Thursday, August 21, in Quakertown, Pa., to discuss
its review of an application for a license to operate a commercial underwater
irradiator in Milford Township (Bucks County), Pa.
The meeting is scheduled for 7 to 10 p.m. in the auditorium at Quakertown High School, 600 Park Avenue in Quakertown. It will be a follow-up to the NRC’s presentation at a July 16th meeting held by the Milford Township Board of Supervisors regarding this facility. The NRC is continuing to review the application submitted to the NRC on February 25 by CFC Logistics. The company stated in its application that the irradiator would be employed primarily for the irradiation of food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical products. However, CFC also said it might be used to irradiate a wide range of other materials. NRC reviews irradiator applications with respect to the safety of employees and the public around the facility. Other federal agencies, such as the Food and Drug Administration, are responsible for the safety of food and determine whether food may be irradiated. |
