The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission has issued its final environmental impact statements on the proposed renewal of the operating licenses of the Catawba and McGuire nuclear power plants. In the reports, the NRC staff found there are no environmental impacts that would preclude license renewal.

The McGuire nuclear facility is located 17 miles north-northwest of Charlotte, North Carolina, in Mecklenburg County. The operating licenses for Units 1 and 2 expire on June 12, 2021, and March 3, 2023, respectively.

The Catawba nuclear facility is located 18 miles southwest of Charlotte, North Carolina, in York County. The operating licenses for Units 1 and 2 expire on December 6, 2024, and February 24, 2026, respectively.

Duke Energy Corporation, the operator of the four units, submitted the application for renewal of all four operating licenses on June 13, 2001.

As part of its environmental review of the application, the NRC held public meetings near both facilities, concerning the scope of the review and on a draft version of the environmental impact statement for each plant. Comments were received from members of the public, local officials and representatives of other agencies.

The reports will be available electronically on the NRC web site at: http://www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/adams.html through the NRC’s Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS). Help in using ADAMS is available by contacting the NRC Public Document Room staff at 301/415-4737 or 1/800/397-4209, or by sending a message to pdr@nrc.gov via e-mail. The reports also are available for public inspection at the NRC’s Public Document Room, located at One White Flint North, 11555 Rockville Pike, Rockville, Maryland.
