27TH ANNUAL WATER REACTOR SAFETY INFORMATION MEETING TO BE HELD
Nuclear Regulatory Commission Chairman Greta Joy Dicus will be a featured speaker at the NRC's 27th Water Reactor Safety Information Meeting to be held October 25-27 at the Marriott Hotel in Bethesda, Md.
The meeting will feature presentations and discussions on a number of leading technical topics. It will run from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Monday; 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday; and 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
Participants will include representatives from the NRC, U.S. government laboratories, private contractors, universities, electric industry groups, reactor vendors, and a number of international organizations.
NRC Commissioner Jeffrey S. Merrifield will deliver the keynote address at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, October 25, at the opening plenary session. He will be followed by NRC Commissioner Edward McGaffigan, Jr., at 10:15 a.m. who will participate in a panel on the impact of emerging technologies on nuclear safety research. Chairman Dicus will discuss nuclear regulatory research in the new millennium at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday. On Wednesday, technical sessions will be held in the morning, and a plenary session will be held in the afternoon and will feature an expert panel addressing the issue, "how best to focus both on safety and increasing regulatory efficiency - the research role."
This year's meeting has a new format that encourages more discussion on research and new technologies. During the three-day meeting, presentations will be made in a number of technical areas -- risk-informed regulation; integrity of primary coolant pressure boundary; regulatory effectiveness assessments; high burnup and mixed oxide fuel under reactivity accident conditions; fuel burnup credit; fission product source terms and applications; and research supporting new technology.
