NRC FINDS NO SIGNIFICANT ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS FROM
EXTENDED OPERATION OF MONTICELLO NUCLEAR POWER PLANT
Printable Version

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has issued its final environmental impact statement on the proposed renewal of the operating license for the Monticello Nuclear Generating Plant. The report contains the NRC’s finding that there are no environmental impacts that would preclude license renewal for an additional 20 years of operation.

The Monticello plant is located approximately 30 miles northwest of Minneapolis, Minn. The current operating license expires Sept. 8, 2010. Nuclear Management Company submitted an application for renewal of the license March 24, 2005.

As part of its environmental review of the application, the NRC held public meetings near the plant to discuss the scope of the review and the draft version of the environmental impact statement. Comments were received from members of the public, local officials, and representatives of state and federal agencies.

The Monticello Final Environmental Impact Statement is available on the NRC’s Web site at this address: http://www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/doc-collections/nuregs/staff/sr1437/supplement26/index.html. Copies are also available for inspection at the NRC’s Public Document Room at One White Flint North, 11555 Rockville Pike, Rockville, Md; and at the Monticello Public Library, 220 W. 6th St., Monticello, Minn., and the Buffalo Public Library, 18 N.W. Lake Blvd., Buffalo, Minn.
