CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced that public officials have until Wednesday, June 23, 1999, to apply for federal disaster assistance.
Federal disaster assistance may include reimbursement of 75% of the costs to repair, restore, or replace damaged infrastructure such as roads, bridges, utilities and public facilities to their pre-disaster condition. This assistance also includes money to reimburse eligible costs associated with emergency protective measures and emergency debris removal.
Eligible applicants are those who are legally responsible for eligible work in the designated disaster area and are one of the following:
- State or State agency
- Local government, such as city, county, or town
- Other State political subdivisions, such as a special district
- Public entities and rural unincorporated communities provided that an application is submitted on their behalf by a political subdivision of the State
Certain Private Nonprofit organizations (PNP) may also receive assistance. Eligible PNPs include educational, utility, emergency, medical, rehabilitation, and temporary or permanent custodial care facilities (including those for the aged and disabled), and other PNP facilities which provide essential services of a governmental nature to the general public.
Government and eligible PNPs in Black Hawk, Bremer, Buchanan, Clayton, Delaware, Dubuque, Fayette, Harrison, Jones, and Linn counties have until June 23, 1999 to submit their applications for federal disaster assistance. According to officials, 75 percent of the costs of approved projects will be reimbursed by federal funds. The State of Iowa will pay 10 percent and the applicant the remaining 15 percent.
The declaration also makes cost-shared funding available to the state for approved projects that reduce future disaster risks.
