Past Program Activities
Addressed Asthma
- Conducted professional development trainings designed to prepare
nurses to implement new policies, procedures, and programs, with a
special emphasis on those serving schools that have a high prevalence of
asthma.
- Expanded the asthma education initiative by increasing the number
of after-school asthma clubs, using the AsthmaBUSters program
in a greater number of schools, and collaborating with the Office of
Student Health Services to establish a uniform asthma policy.
- Partnered with community agencies to conduct meaningful and
targeted health fairs and World Asthma Day events using the AsthmaBUS.
Provided HIV
Prevention Education
- Continued to strengthen local policies, programs, and support
mechanisms designed to help students prevent HIV/STD infection.
- Assessed the degree to which health education teachers are
incorporating information about HIV and STDs in their instruction.
- Maintained Project ARREST (AIDS Risk-Reduction through Education
and Staff Training), which works to strengthen HIV/STD prevention
education training, increase the number of Health Resource Centers in
high schools, increase communication and dissemination of program
materials on HIV prevention, and strengthen community partnerships
focused on addressing HIV prevention among youth.
Conducted the Youth Risk Behavior Survey
- Developed a YRBS summary report and brochure for widespread public
dissemination.
- Used YRBS data in conjunction with other surveillance data to
improve policies and programs that reduce health risk behaviors among
school-age youth across the city.
- Recruited and trained retired principals to act as YRBS liaisons
to contact principals about the importance of the upcoming YRBS.
