Junior Ranger Program

Planning a trip to Morristown National Historical Park? Explore our revolutionary past and discover fascinating facts about the events, people, places, and things in historic Morristown by asking for a Junior Ranger Handbook. You can get a copy of the handbook at the Morristown National Historical Park Visitor Center at Jockey Hollow or at Washington’s Headquarters.

Complete and present the handbook to a park ranger at Jockey Hollow or Headquarters and receive a Junior Ranger badge for a job well done. A special edition of the Junior Ranger Handbook is available for children under six.

The Youth Conservation Corps has been instrumental in introducing young Americans to conservation and preservation opportunities in national parks since the program was established in 1970.

The program was established to provide youth with the type of work experience that exposes them to nature while also protecting this country’s national resource.  An excerpt from the enabling legislation (PL-91-378-August 13, 1970) puts the youth contribution to the Nation into perspective:

  • “The Congress finds that the gainful employment during the summer months…creates an opportunity for understanding and appreciation of the National’s natural environment and heritage…it is the purpose of this Act to further the development and maintenance of the natural resources of the United States by the Youth, upon whom will fall the ultimate responsibility for maintaining and managing these resources for the American people.”

At Morristown National Historical Park, the youth (ages 15 to 16) not only work within the park boundaries to achieve these ends, but also assist park’s partnerships for the enjoyment of the public.  We have assisted Great Swamp Fish and Wildlife, Cooper Grist Mill, and the Morris Area Girls Scout Council.
