PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Residents who sustained losses or damage as a result of Hurricane Floyd have only 5 more days to visit the FEMA/State Disaster Recovery Center in Somerville, federal and state disaster recovery officials announced today.

"Visits to our Disaster Recovery Center have tapered off," said federal coordinating officer, Peter Martinasco. "As a result, we will be closing the center at 6:00 pm on Saturday, December 11th. But even after it closes, FEMA will be as close as a telephone call away,"

Disaster victims may still register for assistance by calling toll-free 1-800-462-9029 (TTY 1-800-462-7585 for the hearing- or speech-impaired) until December 17, 1999. To find out about assistance programs and the status of their applications, people can call the FEMA Helpline at 1-800-525-0321

Since opening on October 1, 1999, recovery centers in Somerset, Bergen and Passaic Counties, as well as temporary centers in the six other declared counties, have helped over 4,100 applicants - providing information and counseling on a wide range of disaster assistance programs.
