LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and Nevada Division of Emergency Management (DEM) urge governmental agencies in Las Vegas and other communities and special districts in Clark County, that sustained damage and extraordinary expenses stemming from the July 8 floods, to apply for state and federal assistance as soon as possible.
Requests for Public Assistance (RPAs) must be filed with FEMA's Public Assistance (Infrastructure) division by the close of business on August 19 for agencies to qualify for assistance.
Certain private non-profit organizations that provide necessary and/or governmental type services to communities may also qualify for state and federal assistance and are also urged to apply.
The State of Nevada and FEMA have programs that offer financial assistance for the repair and/or replacement of damaged or destroyed infrastructure including roads, bridges, culverts, buildings and other publicly-owned facilities. Assistance is also available for debris removal and costs of extraordinary services by police and fire departments and other agencies that respond to emergencies. FEMA pays 75 percent of costs.
Representatives of more than 100 agencies attended the applicants' briefing conducted by the State and FEMA's Public Assistance division, but only seven have filed RPAs to date. Preliminary damage estimates, made just after the flood disaster occurred, show that costs of damage to infrastructure in Clark County and Las Vegas totaled more than $20 million.
