HAGATNA, Guam -- FEMA Region IX Regional Director Jeff Griffin visited Guam on the one year anniversary of Typhoon Pongsona. Guam was struck last year by two typhoons that caused more than $278 million in damages to the island.

During a commemoration ceremony with Governor Felix Camacho, Mr. Griffin presented a check totaling nearly $7M for 12 separate Hazard Mitigation Grant Program projects being undertaken in Guam.

The 12 projects include three separate efforts to bury electrical transmission lines from substations to critical facilities, as well as a seismic retrofit of airport facilities and the installation of Typhoon shutters at the port and the University of Guam, just to name a few.

"These 12 projects encompass a wide variety of efforts to make Guam most disaster-resistant," said Jeff Griffin, Regional Director, FEMA Region IX. "FEMA considers these mitigation grants a cornerstone of its mission to prevent future damage from the typhoons and earthquake that regularly visit this beautiful Pacific island."

The federal money is made available under FEMA's Hazard Mitigation Grant Program, which provides money to lessen future impact disasters have on people and property. Program funds are based on a percentage of the total disaster assistance funds provided to Guam after last year’s typhoons.
