Dededo, Guam -- FEMA Director and Acting Under Secretary for Emergency Preparedness and Response Directorate, a part of the Department of Homeland Security, Michael D. Brown, has announced that President George W. Bush signed documents amending the August 6, 2002 and the December 11, 2002 disaster declarations for the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas Islands, increasing the federal cost-share from the previous 75 percent to 90 percent. The authorization was based on special conditions and documentation, which warranted the adjustment of Federal funds.

The August 6 declaration for Typhoon Chata'an is amended to increase the cost share of federal funds for Public Assistance and Hazard Mitigation Grant Programs. The December 11 declaration for Typhoon Pongsona is amended to increase the cost share of federal funds for Public Assistance, including direct Federal assistance, and Hazard Mitigation Grant Programs, and for Other Needs Assistance under the Individual and Household Program. The cost share reduction is effective back to the August 6 and December 11, 2002 declaration dates.

Federal Coordinating Officer David Fukutomi said, "The governor and his staff are to be congratulated and commended for their dedication to assist the people of CNMI. Through their commitment and the direct relationship between FEMA and the CNMI government, they have provided documentation supporting their request, which met FEMA's nationwide guidelines for cost share adjustments."
