Lufkin, TX -- The Lufkin-based Disaster Field Office (DFO), headquarters for the Columbia Shuttle recovery operation, will close Saturday, May 10.
The DFO opened Feb.1 as a result of President Bush's emergency declaration naming the Federal Emergency Management Agency as the lead federal agency for the recovery effort. The office, located at 415 S. First Street in Lufkin, provided a base of operations for more than 100 federal, state, and local recovery agencies.
During the last three months, ground and air searchers covered more than 2.2 million acres. So far, more than 78,000 pieces of the Shuttle have been recovered.
NASA will continue recovery operations at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, where they have established a Columbia Recovery Office.
If anyone suspects they may have found a piece of material from the Space Shuttle Columbia, they are urged to call the NASA toll-free debris hotline at 866-446-6603.
