Secretary Powell traveled to Kiev, Ukraine on January 22 to represent President Bush and the American people at the January 23 inauguration of Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko.

Secretary Powell with Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko speak to the press during th Ukrainian Presidential Inauguration. The U.S. congratulates President Yushchenko on his historic victory and wishes him all success for his term in office. The U.S. also congratulates the Ukrainian people for the courage they displayed in standing up for their democratic rights. The United States stands ready to strengthen its cooperation with Ukraine and looks forward to working closely with Ukraine’s new president. [photo gallery]
