Secretary of State Colin L. Powell traveled to Thailand, Kenya and Spain from October 16 to October 24, 2003. He first went to Bangkok, Thailand where he attended the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum ministerial meeting, before joining the President’s party.

October 22,2003: Secretary Powell walks with Kenya's Foreign Minister Kolonzo Musyoka (L) an with Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM) leader Dr John Garang (2nd from L), and Sudan's First Vice President Ali Osman Mohamed Taha, in the Kenyan town of Naivasha, 90 kms from the capital Nairobi. The Government of Sudan and the SPLM met with Secretary Powell and are hoping to sign a comprehensive peace agreement with power and wealth sharing by the end of December in talks aimed at ending the 20 year civil war. During this visit he met with senior Kenyan government officials to discuss a variety of bilateral issues, following up on the recent State Visit. Secretary Powell also engaged with the Sudanese parties to encourage progress in the peace process. The success of this process is an important Administration goal.

The Secretary continued on to Madrid, Spain to lead the U.S. delegation, together with Treasury Secretary Snow, to the International Conference for the Reconstruction of Iraq from October 23-24. Also see The New Iraq: Progress & the Path Forward [DSL/Cable] [dial-up] [audio] [transcript]
