West Virginia Disaster Assistance Tops $22 Million: Application Deadline Approaching

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- With the January 20 application deadline two weeks away, West Virginia residents affected by November's severe storms, flooding and mudslides have been approved for more than $22 million in disaster assistance to date, according to the Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

"We want to ensure that everyone affected by the November storms calls 1-800-621-3362 to register with FEMA before the January 20 deadline," said FEMA Federal Coordinating Officer Michael Bolch. "I would encourage anyone who sustained damage to call. Citizens shouldn't disqualify themselves."

The total includes funds for Individual Assistance, Crisis Counseling administered through the Department of Health and Human Resources, U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) low-interest disaster loans and Public Assistance to help state agencies and local governments. On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
