Bothell, WA - The U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Regional Director John Pennington will present the City of Bothell Fire and Emergency Medical Services with a $712,755 grant to help support local firefighters Wednesday, October 8, 2003, 1:30 p.m. at their downtown firehouse at 10726 Beardslee Boulevard in Bothell.

The FEMA Assistance to Fire Fighters Grant Program is designed to increase the effectiveness of fire fighting operations, firefighter health and safety programs, new fire apparatus, EMS programs, and Fire Prevention and Safety Programs.

"We applied through the FY 2003 FEMA Assistance to Fire Fighters program for funds to purchase 117 new self contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) units, and additional masks and air cylinders," said Acting Chief Ron Zsigmondovics of the City of Bothell Fire & E.M.S. "It'll be a joint purchase that includes City of Bothell Fire & E.M.S., Shoreline Fire Department and Northshore Fire Department." Bothell, Northshore and Shoreline's current equipment is similar, but incompatible. The grant will allow the three departments to standardize training as well as equipment.

"Our nation's firefighters are the first responders into almost every emergency," said FEMA Regional Director John Pennington. "Through this award program, President Bush has provided FEMA the opportunity to significantly enhance the Fire and EMS services they provide to Americans."

On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages Citizen Corps, the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
