Anchorage, AK -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), has obligated $1.4 million to repair damage caused by spring flooding to the Lime Village Washeteria. The village is located on the south bank of the Stony River approximately 185 air miles west of Anchorage. According to FEMA Regional Director John Pennington, Lime Village Washeteria sustained severe damages when river ice left the channel during the 2002 spring thaw and pushed the structure off of its foundation.

"The washeteria was a key source of potable water in the village and offered shower facilities, washers and dryers critical to personal hygiene during the long winter season," said Pennington. "FEMA is providing 75 percent of this project's $1.8 million cost, with the remaining 25 percent non-federal share coming from the state of Alaska and local resources."

Funds are made available under the FEMA Public Assistance program and are administered by the State of Alaska Division of Emergency Services. Under the program, eligible disaster-related costs are reimbursed to government and non-profit entities, open to the public, providing government-like services in the area of emergency protective measures, debris removal and restoration of public facilities.
