Seismic Scientists Seek Out Seattle in September

SEATTLE, Wash. -- Hundreds of geoscientists, engineers, insurance regulators, developers and emergency managers will converge on SEATTLE, Wash. to take part in the first National Earthquake Risk Management Conference, 17-22 September 2000, at the Sea Tac Double Tree Inn. Sponsored by the Western States Seismic Policy Council (WSSPC), the Cascadia Region Earthquake Workgroup (CREW), FEMA and USGS, the six-day conference combines plenary sessions and field trips to highlight new technologies, showcase effective loss reduction strategies and share strategies for reducing the social and economic impact of seismic disasters. According to CREW Executive Director Rob Johnson, the conference reflects a commitment to changing the way America deals with disasters by stressing pre-disaster planning and aggressive mitigation measures taken before disaster strikes.
"Three years ago, FEMA implemented a new initiative called 'Project Impact: building more disaster resistant communities.' It's since grown to include over 250 communities nation-wide. Project Impact is about forging local partnerships, prioritizing hazards, pooling resources, and taking action now to reduce the effects of future disasters," said Johnson. "This National Earthquake Risk Management Conference embraces the Project Impact philosophy, and its commitment to building a more sustainable, disaster-resistant America."
