Seattle, WA-- Federal Emergency Management Agency Regional Director John Pennington today named Jane Vukonich as Tribal Liaison for tribal governments and native villages in Alaska, Oregon, Idaho and Washington. According to Pennington, tribal governments have been very receptive to agency initiatives for tribal government participation in all-hazards planning.

"Disaster recovery always begins in the hands of local communities. Our tribal partners play a critical role preparing for and responding to disasters, particularly in this post-9-11environment," said Pennington. "Jane has already forged solid relations with many of our tribal counterparts. This appointment allows her to build on previous successes."

"I'm excited to be selected for this position," said Vukonich. "We have 272 federally recognized tribal governments in our four-state region. I am committed to building and strengthening lasting partnerships and I look forward to meeting this challenge in the spirit of shared solutions to reduce disaster vulnerability."

Born in Seattle, Washington Vukonich holds an Associates Degree in the Administration of Criminal Justice from Bellevue Community College and has studied at Western Washington and the University of Washington. She and her husband Ron live in Edmonds, Washington.
