Salem, OR -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), has obligated more than $11 million to reimburse the Oregon Department of Forestry's eligible costs for fighting four major wildfires this year: Sheldon Ridge Fire ($1.9 million), Winter Fire ($3.6 million), Squire Peak/Wall Creek ($1.5 million) and Timbered Rock Fire ($4.3 million). According to FEMA Regional Director John Pennington, primary considerations for the Fire Management Grant Program include the clear and present danger to life and property.

"This was a tough fire season, particularly for our western forests," said Pennington. "This grant money shows the Bush Administration and FEMA's commitment to insuring that firefighters have the resources they need, where they need them and in the quantities needed to save lives and rescue property." Eligible reimbursable wild land firefighting activities include aircraft, crews and equipment, as well as certain supervisory and support costs. Funds are awarded on a cost-share basis, and pay up to 75 percent of the state eligible wild land firefighting costs.

The Fire Management Assistance Grant Program is provided under the President's Disaster Relief Fund and made available by FEMA to assist in fighting wild land fires that threaten to cause a major disaster. The assistance pays up to 75 percent of the state's eligible wild land firefighting costs under an approved grant for managing, and controlling designated fires.
