Anchorage, AK -- One month after President Bush declared the Copper River and Alaska Gateway Regional Education Attendance Areas a federal disaster area from the Nov. 3-10 earthquake and aftershocks, disaster assistance has topped $400 thousand, according to federal and state officials.

"Decisions on federal loans and grants are made on a case-by-case basis and we are pleased that we have been able to provide a financial helping hand to individuals and business owners who had losses during the November earthquake," said William Lokey, federal coordinating officer for the disaster.

Individuals in the declared area have until Jan. 17, 2003 to register for disaster assistance through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) toll-free number 1-800-621-FEMA (3362); and TTY: 1-800-462-7585 for the hearing- or speech-impaired.
